The ideal starting age is 7 – 9 years, as the movement sequences necessary for playing the viola can be learned and coordinated particularly well at this age. The viola is rarely used as an entry-level instrument. Most people start taking lessons after they have had some experience with the violin and then develop a specific interest in the typical deeper, fuller and softer sound of the viola.

If you want to buy a viola, it is advisable to seek advice from the teacher before buying it. A technically poorly functioning instrument is disappointing for children as well as adults and hinders musical development. As a layperson, it is hardly possible to judge the tonal and structural qualities of a viola. If you want to rent a viola, I only recommend violin makers or music shops.
